Airbags

NB - airbags are powered by explosive charges and are very dangerous, so they require extremely careful handling. Read the workshop manual before commencing any overhaul.

 
     
 

These pictures show a european specification Freelander I passenger airbag being detonated.

     
             

This frame shows the unit just before detonation

30ms later, the bag is inflating at over 200mph

30ms after that, the bag is fully inflated with 120 litres of gas

A few frames later, the bag is beginning to deflate

This animated sequence, at 1/10th actual speed, shows the airbag being detonated. Watch how the force of the explosion causes the unit, vice and bench to deflect! You can also see the gas venting through the holes on the underside of the bag.
